Film Their Remaining Journey
Their Remaining Journey
debut feature film written, directed and edited by John Clang
2018 | 101 mins | Chinese, Hokkien, Cantonese with English subtitles | DCP | 1:85:1 | Black & White, Color | 5.1
Trapped with a family of strangers in Singapore while waiting for reincarnation, a dead theater actress observes the life of others and the loss of her own family. Within the same time frame, two other incidents take place in New York and Hualien.
An ex-mistress travels from Singapore to New York after learning the death of her lover while a Singaporean living in Hualien is attempting to muster courage to tell his wife about his betrayal and illness.
Seemingly unrelated, the three protagonists form a complete cycle of reincarnation.

Director's Statement
As an artist, I wanted to make films when I was 23 years old but did not do it because I felt that I had nothing new to contribute. Twenty years later, I feel ready to start exploring this journey and create films that matter to my heart. The main idea is to invite everyday people sitting in front of the goggle-box to come inside the goggle-box and play the leading roles.
Their Remaining Journey is the first in a trilogy of films I'm making. It involves the mobilization of an entire family, my parents and many close friends to be the cast, experiencing the process of first time filmmaking alongside me. By weaving fictional narratives into their routine life, it became a game and an opportunity for them to express their inner feelings.
Since they are not actors by profession, the film is mostly presented in black and white. I did not want the lush colors of the film to be a distraction or concealment of their subtle performance, expression or even awkwardness. This intended methodology of utilizing documentary approach in a fictional film allows me to explore beyond my original script, leaving a much bigger space for further contemplation.
